Full-scale prophylactic program of breast growths is starting to be practised in Latvia | 2007-04-20

Recent years’ statistics tell that the risk of having breast cancer is for one in nine women. It is the most widespread kind of malignant tumour for women and the most frequent cause of disease related with onclolgy in Europe and Latvia.

Although many risk factors that cause breast cancer are known, a receipt of 100 % avoiding this disease has not been invented yet. The only way how to decrease the death- rate of patients who are suffering from this disease is carrying self-examination, visiting doctor in time and performing examinations that allow observing all changes in breasts regularly. In Latvia two methods of breast exmaniation are offered most frequently – ultrasonography and mammography. In particular cases magnetic resonance is also applied for making a more accurate diagnostics or when determining a position of implants. Combination of several examination methods is applied pretty often.

Ultrasonography is an absolutely harmless method of examination, and usually it is applied to women up to fourty. The breast tissue of young women is dense, therefore this method of fragmentary examination is sufficient enough for observing knots during examination. Ultrasonography is applied also in cases of various inflammations and cysts. However, women who are more than 45 yeards old, should carry out mammography, which is an x-ray examination of breasts with low-intensity x-rays. It gives an overview of both breasts in various different positions. This is a screening method of breast cancer, due to which it is possible to reveal a tumour at its beginning stage. During mammography, it is also possible to reveal tumour of 0.5 to 0.6 cm size, which cannot be found yet by touching with hands. If results of the first mammography are normal and there are no visual changes of breasts, this kind of examination can be carried out every two years. No matter what is the result, breast cancer screening with the help of mammography method should be performed by 50 up to 69 years old women once a year. This examination is almost obligatory for women, who have limited possibilities of palpation due to the large size of breasts.

Advantages of digital mammography:

There is the possibility of enlarging or reducing the picture, contrasts can be made sharper to it. The picture can be viewed in soft tissue or hard tissue regime, and the measurements are very accurate.
The pictures of visual diagnostics (dg) can be transmitted within a local computer network and sent to other centers, which have got a digital radiology information system (RIS).
Examinations can be stored in external information carriers (CD, DVD etc.) in "Dicom-3" format, which is recognizable in each medicine institution worldwide where modern digital equipment is used.
These pictures of visual diagnostics are of good quality and can be printed out in different sizes and types – on a photography paper or film, combining different examinations of picture diagnostics on one laser printer printout.
The introduction of digital radiology system and system of centralized data archiving and communication (PACS) allows storing all data about the previously done examinations of the patient for a long term, thus giving the opportunity of comparing the data and following the progress of disease.

Novelty in getting rid of undesirable hair | 2007-04-20

In order to get rid of all hair, 5-8 procedures must be carried out each 4-6 weeks. The client must take into consideration that, unfortunately, it is not possible to get rid of the hair with the help of photoepilation method forever. In order to make them more invisible, correction is recommended once a year.

Photoepilation with Lipoxsome for removing fair hair

Nowadays photoepilation is considered as one of the most progressive methods of hair removal. However, despite all the advantages of this method, certain limitations exist to the procedure performance. Up to now it was not possible to remove hair of reduced amount of pigment or different kind of pigment (blonde, grey, fair and red hair) with the help of the laser equipments and systems of IPL (intense pulsed light), because they did not absorb or absorbed just a little amount of light energy. The “bulb” of hair was not heated sufficiently enough to eliminate the follicle of hair. By applying Lipoxome, it is possible to supply natural melanine to the follicles of hair. Lipoxome is "an encapsulated liquid of melanine liposomes", which is filled as a spray in bottle of 100ml. It is applied by spraying it on skin four times, two times a day one month before each procedure of photoepilation. Hair must be shaved in order to allow Lipoxome getting in the hair follicle. It must be admitted that the “carrier system” of liposomes carries and stores natural melanine directly in the hair follicle, not in the skin surrounding it. The liposome molecules of Lipoxome are small, but in an amount, which is sufficient for getting into the hair effectively but not in blood circulation or skin.

If a remarkable redness or oedema is observed after vaxing, it is recommended to calm the skin and perform photoepilation after a few days.

Photoepilation with Lightwave Advance after vaxing

Since the hair that are in the active stage of growth are sensitive to the light impulse (because of high concentration of melanine), photoepilation was usually not applied shortly after vaxing, removal of hair by epilator shavers or pincers. In between the procedure only razor or depilation crèmes could be applied. Now the Italian company CERRY has invented photoepilation equipment "Lightwave Advance", due to which it is possible to perform photoepilation alsoafter pulling out the hair. This procedure is carried out straight after vaxing or pulling out hair with epilator shaver or pincers. By removing hair this way, tiny capillaries are damaged in the hypoderma and microhemorrages form around them. Then a strong light impulse is directed towards them (coagulation of tiny capillaries takes place), blood-vessels are blocked, nutritives and oxygen are not supplied to the follicle of hair, and therefore the hair dies.

Since the hair is pulled out before the procedure, it has no matter, how much dark pigment it contains. Fair and grey hair can also be removed. It relieves the struggle with undesirable hair on face significantly or in cases when razor or depilation crème cannot be applied if the skin is very sensitive.

Siascopy – a new examination method of birth-marks | 2007-04-20

Nowadays opportunities, which have been previously inaccessible, have become a reality. The high achievements in technologies let us evaluate not only the indications of the surface of skin growth. For example, with the help of siascopy it is possible to "travel" up to 4 mm inside the structure of skin and fully determine the three-dimensional structure of the birth-mark. It means that all the necessary information about the particular skin growth can be achieved within a couple of minutes. In diagnostics laser beams of particular wavelength are applied. New possibilities in the treatment of vein diseases | 2007-04-20

In specialized medicine centers of Europe sclerotherapy is applied for 15 years already for the treatment of trunk veins, but in Latvia this service is available only starting from this year. The last 4-5 years the method has been developed, and the procedure is performed with a foamed sclerotising medicament. It gives the opportunity to improve the result significantly, because after application of the liquid substance the number of recidives after the therapy was in ~ 20% of cases after a year, but with a foamed one - just in 10 % cases. Foam sclerotherapy is an alternative for other kinds of vein operations and, just as the endoluminal laser operation, it is performed under control of ultrasonography (US). During the laser operation the vein is closed with the help of the laser beam impulse, which has a thermal effect to the vein wall from inside by entering a laser cord. During sclreotherapy a medicament is injected, which acts chemically on the vein wall. These operations, unlike classic ones, in which a cut in groin is made, have a number of advantages – the desirable cosmetic effect is achieved (no scars are left); they are safer and cheaper for the patient. It gives the opportunity to perform operations regardless to the age and general condition of health. Finally, patient can leave the hospital straightly after the operation and start working on the second day, thus having no harm on his/her career. As compared with other methods, the foam sclerotherapy is ten times cheaper, therefore this treatment method of vein diseases will be approachable for more people. In separate cases recurrence of the disease is possible after foam therapy. Nevertheless, it may occur more rarely than after classic vein operations. Although applied for the treatment of veins that are not larger than 1 cm in diameter, foam sclerotherapy allows eliminating particular forms of varicose diseases, when treatment with other methods could be unsuccessful.

Thermocoagulation is mostly applied for cosmetic purpose or in the post-operation period as the concluding procedure. With the help of this method it is possible to close the tiniest capillaries of blood-vessels thermally, by giving impulses or making small needle-pricks both on face and legs, which was not available in Latvia before. The desirable result can be achieved within one visit. Besides, it does not leave cosmetic defects – scars. An equal result can be achieved also by applying a special equipment of vascular laser or IPL (intense pulsed light). However, there are limitations in such cases – the level of skin tan must be taken into account (the procedure must not be performed in summertime and in case of attending solarium).

The specialist together with patient decides, which of the methods is the most appropriate in each particular case, paying attention to the form of disease and financial possibilities of the patient.

Honey – gentle and strong

Natural products are applied in beauty care procedures more and more frequently, and honey is among these products. Alike chocolate, honey reveals its excellent characteristics by taking it both through oesophagus and skin. Besides, honey is one of the few food products of animal origin in retail, which is not processed.
Due to its sticky consistency, honey can give various altering sensations during the massage... The massage is based on alteration of reflexo therapy, which greatly combines the effect of bee honey and remedial effect of the massage. Honey can cause both gentle and “thrilling” sensations depending on the ambient temperature and technique of massage. In sauna procedures, by massaging it in heat, one can lapse in a pleasant sensual feeling, when honey is melting. The modern esthetic medicine, in turn, is directed towards achievement of particular cosmetic result, transforming this massage into an untraditionally original “therapy of feelings”. The institutions of beauty care mostly offer honey massages, during which honey is massaged in to the skin by slapping movements or by “sticking” palms strongly to the body and then jerking them back sharply. Then the slapping gradually turns into much sharper and stronger movements until the skin has almost absorbed honey. Honey massage can be performed for particular parts of body or for the whole body. Since honey has also an antispeptic and softening characteristics, it is frequently used in applications (masks) by applying it on problematic zones of a hot body.

For a remedial and cosmetic purpose

There is a tendency of offering more and more cosmetics that have natural substances in their basic consistencies. However, there are products, which can be used in natural way, and honey is one of them. You can feel a rich smell of nature by using it. Besides, honey mssage is known as a remedial massage for centuries applied for the improvement of body tone and health strengthening. Honey absorbs toxins and stimulates their elimination from body by supplying biologically active substances to the organism. It improves the general condition of organism. During the honey massage, viscera and tissues are supplied with nutritives as the blood circulation in deeper skin layers is bettered. A complex honey therapy serves as a great relaxing and recreation procedure that gives contribution also to the skin – it is cleansed, it gets silky and thickenings under the skin smoothe out.

Honey therapy begins with a peeling massage performed with abrasive gloves on a dry skin. It is followed by a lymph-draining massage with honey. By adapting an appropriate massage technique, it is mostly used for tonifying connective tissue and skin, struggling with cellulite, paying particular attention to the problematic zones of body and processing them. The effectiveness of the procedure is achieved by a gradual pass from superficial massage techniques to a deep-effect massage. Improvement of blood circulation and stimulation of lymphatic drainage are on the basis of cellulite treatment. As a result, overweight is also reduced. A wet-towel massage is performed after honey massage. Honey massage is not always giving calmness and pleasant feelings, because it is directed towards achievement of a certain result, therefore in the concluding part a massage that harmonizes your body and mind is performed by applying oil.

Things that must be admitted:

Massage is highly recommendable in cases of joint diseases, metabolic disorders, disorders of immunity and cellulite.
Massage is not advisable in cases of acute inflammations, enlarged veins, serious heart diseases, tumours and particular traumas. (You must consult the specialist about other contraindications that might exist before the massage!) People, who have allergic reaction to products produced by bees, must be particularly cautious!
Sauna procedures – vaporization – are highly advisable before the honey massage. Thus your skin will enjoy the “honey ceremony” completely.
In order to improve the general condition of body, it is recommendable to drink 1.5-2 liters of water or herbal tea.

Chocolate has become a trendy product of skin care, but chocolate procedures, which have become possession in the world already, now are available also in Latvia’s beauty care institutions. Why should we resist a delight, moreover, if it is so healthy? What are the reasons for chocolate massage being so healthy and giving such a pleasure and delight? There has always been a bit mystical and positively thrilling aura around chocolate – it is characterized as being sexually stimulating, because it contains a substance, whose amount increases significantly, when a person is in love. Cocoa stimulates creation of substance of happiness – endorphine – in brain, which relieves pain, discharges from negative emotions, averts tiredness and, finally, makes people happier... Chocolate contains microelements that are crucial to the organism - ferrum, calcium, magnium and vitamines - A, B1, C, D and E. The fats of pure high-quality chocolate are also friendly to the human organism. They do not contain cholesterol, therefore they do not block blood vessels. It is an erroneous supposition that milk and white chocolates are better for health than the dark ones. Milk and white chocolates usually contain less than 20% of cocoa, but they do contain a lot of sugar and other substances, which are not necessary neither for the organism of an adult, nor that of a child. Chocolate is healthy, if we take one condition into account – if it is pure, black chocolate containing at least 60% of cocoa and minimal amount of sugar. If 50 grams of such pure chocolate are eaten each day, it serves as prophylaxis against high blood pressure and heart insufficiency.

By taking into consideration that chocolate has got so many positive characteristics, chocolate therapy plays a significant role in the range of SPA procedures in the 21^st century.
